The Women Only Village.
Discover the Umoja Uaso village in Kenya. Founded in 1990, this is an all-female matriarch village located near the town of Archers Post in Samburu County, 380 km from the capital, Nairobi. Umoja Village, which was originally founded as a refuge for abused women and has now grown into a sustainable village in its own right. For all who wish to visit, some admission fees will be required, which goes to a good cause.
Reasons To Visit Umoja Village
With one goal in mind, Umoja was formed as sanctuary for survivors of violence against women and for young girls running from forced marriages or female genital mutilation. Today, around 40 women and children live in this village and when visiting, you’ll get to see some of their huts, the pre-school and the napoo (village parliament). Of course you’ll also learn more about their traditions, stories and current life. As for men, they’re not allowed to live in the village but are welcome to join the tour.
1. Anti FGM (Female Genital Mutilation) Campaigns
Umoja Uaso Women Group (UUWG) has been at the forefront of championing for girl child and women rights taking every available opportunity to address the agenda. This has been the modus operandi being iconic in the field of gender mainstreaming. We conduct wide scale sensitization campaign in our outreach in vulnerable areas.
2. Beaded Jewelry Business
Jewelry and artisan work has been the axis of Umoja Women social-economic activities. They kept some livestock such as goats and cattle, but due to local insecurity, they lost them all. 3. Gardening & Clean Water
Umoja Uaso Women Group and Umoja Muehlbauer Academy ensures constant provision of clean and safe drinking water. The school has a borehole and a water desalination reverse osmosis system that supplies fresh water. Water availability is adequate for the village, the village gardens, the academy and Umoja Uaso Campsite.
4. Samburu Cultural Tour
Immerse yourself into culture in Umoja Village. Discover the Samburu’s ways of life, customs, religion, art, and handcrafts, among others which is key to expand a guest’s understanding of local setup with nature. Umoja Camp offers an option to visit Umoja Uaso Women Group cultural village where the ladies reside depending largely on village guests’ visit. The village is walking distance adjacent to the camp.
5. Scholarship For Vulnerable Girls
Through benefactors Freundeskreis Umoja – Friends of Umoja (FKU), the school initiated a scholarship programme in 2017 labeled P+7 for young girls from vulnerable families joining Grade One, taking 20 girls a year. In any circumstance that sponsors exceed 20 supporters for a given year; the excess is assigned to boys from humble backgrounds.
6. Running An Academy - Umoja Muehlbauer Academy
Umoja Muehlbauer Academy was launched on the 14th of May, year 2014 with a principal objective of offering quality education and empowering vulnerable girls from humble background to secure a future through offer of basic education and scholarship. The first three standard classrooms blocks and an administration office were built courtesy of Muelhbauer Foundation in Roding, Germany.
7. Enforcing Gender Parity In Every Community And Political Representation
Among the other important objectives that Umoja Uaso Women Group pushes for is a community participation where every voice is heard, and everyone is equally represented regardless of the gender.
