The Top 10 Things To Do In Lewa Conservancy
When planning on taking a safari trip to Lewa Conservancy, travelers who stay inside the conservancies are able to take part in a number of wildlife safari activities that are not allowed inside National Parks in Kenya, including night game drives and private bush walks. 1. Safari Game Drives In Lewa Conservancy
Guided game-drives are the best way to cover ground and see the most wildlife in Lewa Park. Accompanied by an expert driver guide, you’ll move around the safari tracks, rocky terrains, and dry sandy riverbeds as you search for the big five wildlife safari animals.
The present fleet are specially fitted, 4×4 Toyota Landcruiser’s. These vehicles feature enhancements specifically designed for comfort and photography – an open sided jeep with front row seats, photographic equipment stands, and charging sockets. Clients will share game drives unless “exclusive use of vehicle” has been prebooked at an extra charge.
With strict limits on tourist numbers, the Conservancy, guests can enjoy an almost private game viewing experience. The game driving is plentiful, with rich sightings of rhino, elephant, buffalo, the rare Grevy Zebra, resident predators, to a backdrop of beautiful views of snowcapped Mt. Kenya.
2. Guided Walking Safaris In Lewa Conservancy
Lewa walking guides are trained wildlife rangers from the Conservancy. Apart from their knowledge on rhino conservation, they are also knowledgeable about the tracks, botany; and most walks leave from camp. Take the time to leave the car behind and enjoy the small things – tracks, dung beetles, micro-ecosystems.
3. Bush Dinners and Sundowners In Lewa Conservancy
Take a moment to sit back, enjoy the spectacular views, the smells, the colours, and the gentle breeze. Bush breakfasts are a chance to enjoy a full breakfast, al fresco, in the middle of the plains, surrounded by wildlife. “Sundowners” are a safari tradition – after a day of safari; stop, watch the spectacular sunset; traditionally with a gin and tonic in hand!

5. Cultural Tours & Conservancy Visits In Lewa
Discover on cultural village visits – Lewa Conservancy borders the Samburu community conservancies of Tassia and Il Ngwesi in the arid lowlands of the north. Lewa Park offers visits to neighbouring local Samburu homesteads. The Samburu live in semi-permanent huts known as Manyattas and it is the role of the wife to construct the hut from cattle dung and grass. The families will show you round their home for a fee (payable separately), and will want to take the opportunity to sell their traditional handicrafts – bargain hard!
Go on Conservancy trips – as part of the get involved program, guests who are making donations to the Lewa Education Program, can visit schools during term time. With just a small donation, guests can also visit and/or participate in Conservation work, eg training of tracker dogs, have a tour of the Conservancy offices.
6. Camel Riding & Horse Riding In Lewa
Some of Lewa Safari Lodges offers evening horse rides – you can get very close to plains game as they see you as one of their own! Horse riding is for experienced riders only, as although it is a gentle walk on very well-behaved horses, you are in the wild, and need to be able to bring a situation under control when horses are spooked. Horse riding is subject to availability and there is an additional charge. All the riders will be requested to fill out a questionnaire to find out their competency.
Lewa lodges also offers evening camel rides – less elegant than horse-riding, but suitable for those without riding skills, the camels are led by Samburu handlers and it is picturesque experience. Camel riding is subject to availability and there is an additional charge. There are only three riding camels available.
7. Visit The Ngare Ndare Forest
Another walking tour option is to visit Ngare Ndare forest conservancy. This is a community conservancy to the south of Lewa. There is a canopy walk, and river to play in. There are usually elephants in the forest, so you will be escorted by the Lewa walking guide. This is a full day out from camp with a picnic, and there is an extra cost only to cover the separate conservation fee.
8. Swimming Pool In Lewa Conservancy
Enjoy the cool waters in the heat of the day! Within the lush green gardens, the giraffe design pool has bar service and board games as well as table tennis. There are sunbeds and a shaded lounge area, perfect for reading and relaxing during the day.

The Best Time For Bird Watching In Lewa
Lewa Wildlife Conservancy offers excellent bird watching year-round. The best time for birding is from December to March when migrants are present, they arrive in November and leave around April. This partly coincides with the Wet season October to May when many species are in breeding plumage.

The Weather & Climate In Lewa Conservancy
Given the conservancies location along the Equator, and the surroundings high altitude, Lewa Conservancy experiences a mild climate whereby temperatures are fairly constant throughout the year. Noticeably, daytime temperatures are in the mid-twenties Celsius while the nights are cooler. We therefore recommend warm clothes for the morning game drives. The wet season starts from March to mid-May.

The Dry seasons has mostly sunny days, although rainfall is possible at any time whereas the nighttime and early mornings are cold.

A drier period from December to February separates the short rains and long rains.
